South Holland Business Awards cancelled until 2021

28th July 2020

Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce has announced its South Holland Business Awards will not take place this year.

The Awards, an annual event for many years now were set to return in November, however after careful consideration the Chamber and award partners have made the difficult decision to cancel the awards but will return in 2021.

The difficult decision was taken in a bid to help protect our colleagues, venue staff and as well as minimising risk to the local business community.

Simon Beardsley, Chief Executive, Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce explains the decision “I am sure you can appreciate this isn’t a decision we have taken lightly or with any satisfaction, it is a huge disappointment to us, our year on year sponsors and of course the South Holland business community.

“We held off making this decision for as long as we could, explored contingency plans, however after careful consultation with the team, the Board and partners, we feel the most sensible way forward was to cancel this year’s awards.

“Awards are such a fantastic way of sharing those success stories and we need to ensure they are of course pertinent, timely and appropriate for businesses across all sectors, and as the COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges for businesses, and our entire focus needs to be on supporting the recovery of companies and communities.”

Councillor Nick Worth, South Holland District Council deputy leader and portfolio holder for growth and commercialisation, said: “The South Holland Business Awards is always the highlight of the year for the district’s business community, and it is a great shame, although entirely understandable for everyone involved, that it will not be possible to hold this prestigious event this year.

“The expertise, resilience and dedication of our businesses in the District has never been clearer to see than it has in recent months. I can’t wait for us to be able to gather together safely in the future to share all of these achievements and success stories, and to recognise some of the fantastic work taking place every day across South Holland.”

The South Holland Business Awards play a big part in celebrating business in the South of Lincolnshire and they will return in 2021 to celebrate the great achievements of local businesses.

“We are a nationally leading provider of apprenticeships, but many people locally still don’t know what we do or that the University has a vibrant campus in Holbeach, so winning this award has helped to boost our profile locally.”

Offering part-time study for food industry employees and innovation for businesses, NCFM is part of the University of Lincoln.

Sharon continues: “The value of this award extends beyond reputation and potential business opportunities; it is a chance for us to support a great local event whilst recognising our own team. They appreciate being recognised for their hard work and being shortlisted alone puts big smiles on people's faces!

“The increased awareness doesn’t apply just to potential apprentices, but it receives more attention from companies and the wider community. So, for that reason, we’ll remain focused on winning awards - because what’s good for the food and drink sector is good for us too. Win or lose, being involved matters!”

Anne Mews of Crowtree Wigwams, said: “We were initially approached to enter the South Holland Business Awards by the representative of the LAG for the local LEADER Wash Fens Development programme as it was felt it would be appropriate to have a business which had received funding to be represented in the nominations and it was fantastic that we actually went on to win”.

The Business Innovation of the Year category seeks to find the company that has introduced a new product or process, invention, idea or design that has made a significant contribution to the business.

“Of course, we now have the challenge of maintaining our standards as we grow and since the awards last year we have seen some significant but exciting changes – the team is growing with the addition of a new full-time dentist and building work is starting for a third treatment room.

The Customer Care award celebrates businesses that demonstrate a commitment to continuously improving its standards of customer care.

Jude concluded: “The future is certainly bright for us at Long Sutton Dentistry and entering these awards last year was a great help to showcase our brand to a wider audience area.”

2018 Winners in Focus – Tonic Health

30th July 2019

Our catch up with 2018 South Holland Business Award winners continues and this week it’s Tonic Health, a charity community hub for health and wellbeing based in Spalding.

Tonic Health took home the Supporting the Community award in 2018, which aims to recognise organisations contributing to the community in which they operate.

Chair of Trustees, Michael Morris, highlighted the awards as being a perfect opportunity to look back and see what they’ve achieved: “We have entered the awards on two previous occasions, and receiving a highly commended both times, so thought this would be third time lucky!

“Entering awards such as the South Holland Business Awards provide a perfect platform to look back over what we have delivered and how this has helped the community. As a local charity, the awards help to put us in the spotlight and have our name mixing with other leading businesses and organisations in the area.

“The award has given us an extra boost to strive and develop our ideas and thinking so that we can grow, flourish and continue to make a difference to our local community. We constantly struggle to get our name out into the public domain – for all the people who know about us and the work we do, there are a large number that still haven’t heard about us, so any publicity gained just helps that little bit more!”

At the 2018 awards, judges were impressed with the cutting-edge support that Tonic Health provided to its patients, carers and carers families and its strong links and effective collaborations with local groups, companies and organisations resulting in a successful funding bid of £108,000.

Michael commented on the award win: “Winning the Supporting the Community award was testament to the hard work we have put into the running and development of the organisation and a huge reflection that we are doing well, so all in all very proud indeed.

Anyone interested in entering the awards should visit www.shb-awards.co.uk/apply-for-an-award/

2018 Winners in Focus - Oliver Horne

23rd July 2019

With entries for the 2019 South Holland Business Awards now open, over the coming weeks we’re catching up with some past winners to find out what has changed since winning in 2018 and how the awards have benefitted them.

First up is Oliver Horne, student at the University of Lincoln National Centre for Food and Manufacturing (NCFM) and winner of the Apprentice of the Year award in 2018.

Oliver impressed the judges with the developments he’d made since leaving sixth form and his passion for his future aspirations.

Talking about why he entered the awards is Oliver: “The awards were brought to my attention by my colleague and I decided to enter because I felt over the course of my apprenticeship I’d learnt and achieved so much and it would be great to have the opportunity to shout about it.”

For Oliver, the awards were a great platform to shout about his achievements, which are something he is very proud of: “I’ve worked in such an interesting environment for a long time now, where I can thrive, constantly learning and building my knowledge and expanding my experiences.

“The award meant a lot to me because it gives recognition for things that would have otherwise been taken for granted as just being part of my job and entering and winning these awards showed how I went the extra mile in my role.”

There’s no stopping Oliver, as he is now reaching the end of his Food Industry Technical Professional integrated degree apprenticeship and tells us his plans for the future: “After almost 5 years working for the University of Lincoln, I’ve finally achieved my BSc (Hons) Food science and Technology degree, which was my goal when I first got the job as a technician at NCFM at just 17. Though I very much doubt this will be the end of my formal education and it definitely won’t be the end of my learning as I learn so much day to day at work.

“I plan on staying with NCFM, progressing in my current role. This will be full of opportunities for me as we take on more research and students, plus as we begin to expand to our new site on the new Food Enterprise zone in Holbeach.”

The Apprenticeship of the Year award showcases and celebrates the achievements of learners who have exceeded expectations and shown a dynamic approach to training.

17th April 2017

Local businesses can now start looking forward to one of the Chambers biggest events of the year. The South Holland Business Awards are back with a bang and are taking place this year on the 23 November at Springfields Conference & Events Centre in Spalding.

The awards which are now in its 5th year running are set to be even bigger than last years which saw over 200 guests in attendance.

Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce caught up with all four of the 2016 apprentice winners to see what winning meant for them, if they would do it all again and what they thought about going to their first award ceremony in Spalding.

Kirsty Buffham, Energy Broker Administrator from Fairnet Commercial Services said:

“Since winning this award, I have taken on more responsibilities within Fairnet Commercial Services, and more clients are willing to pass queries through to me because I am a more recognized member of the team.

“It clearly shows starting as an apprentice can get you somewhere as I have been working for Fairnet Commercial Services for over two years now”.

“Representing Fairnet Commercial Services at the Business Awards was an honor as it is a great business to work for”.

The awards are open to both members and non-members of Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce. All guests will be treated to a three course meal and drinks reception, which will be followed by live entertainment, guest speakers and of course the award ceremony itself.

Speaking about the atmosphere and entertainment on the night, Jacques Ripley from Maples Solicitors, another apprentice winner said:

“The evening was organised and presented brilliantly with the venue looking outstanding.

“The singing Waiting Staff were an excellent touch to the evening and the guest speakers gave very interesting talks.

“It was very rewarding for me personally to win this award as it gave me a sense of achievement and it’s all thanks to Maples. It is an absolute pleasure to be a part of the business community in such a wonderful, thriving town.

“Winning this award has given me more motivation to develop my skills and be more confident with the responsibilities I am given by my employers. As a result of being successful with the Apprentice of the Year award, I feel my maturity has also grown within the workplace.

“Furthermore, it was nice to see the hard work I put into the apprenticeship course paid off, and celebrating it with Maples was an added bonus”.

Nicole Sleaford from Infotel Solutions who also won the apprentice award gave her thoughts on winning saying:

“I was really excited to have been given the opportunity to kick-start my marketing career via an apprenticeship working with Infotel Solutions. To have had my work recognised with the award was a really proud moment and a great achievement.

“Winning completely reinforced the benefits of an apprenticeship.

“Infotel Solutions has always been really supportive and winning the award definitely gave me an extra boost of confidence and motivation.

“It has also inspired me to keep on learning while I’m working because I see the benefits of increasing my skills and knowledge”.

The final apprentice winner, Lisa Wright who is now a Clerical Assistant at the National Centre for Food Manufacturing College of Science also spoke to the Chamber about her increased confidence since winning the award saying:

“Winning the award meant a lot to me as it was my colleagues who nominated me, and knowing they believed I deserved to be nominated was a huge boost to my self-confidence.

“Winning the award was very flattering and it helped me to appreciate what I had achieved having worked at the University for just over a year at that time”.

Speaking about awards ceremony, Lisa said:

“I had never been at an event like the awards before so I had no idea what to expect, but it was a really fun and relaxed evening which myself and my colleagues all enjoyed.

“If there is an opportunity in the future for me to put a colleague forward for a similar award, I will gladly do so - knowing how much it meant to me and with the hope that I can do the same for someone else”.

With a sell-out event last year, the Chamber are gearing up for another huge ceremony which recognises the spirit of the business community in Spalding.
